Canon HistoryCharacter History

Personality:
Aldrich Killian has to be separated into two vastly different sections: The man he was before the rooftop in '99 and the man he was after.

Growing up with multiple physical disabilities, Aldrich was unable to accept that he couldn't use science to make himself better. The human body, and mind, can be altered and reshaped in an effort to reach and maintain perfection. He wanted this for himself, and for everyone else. His determination to reach those goals, and to make himself better physically, led him to be overbearingly persistent when expressing this to other people. Often, he'd come across as obnoxious and irritating, because he was so wholly engrossed in what he was trying to achieve that he appeared to be as socially inept as he was intelligent.

Quoting his father repeatedly, and speaking of him in overly honest terms, shows that while he couldn't understand the life lessons that his father was trying to impart on him, that he'd still listened. Aldrich was attentive, observant, calculating, driven, and even though the event on the rooftop didn't change any of that, it took other characteristics of his personality and threw them into sharp, crystal clear view.

You gave me the greatest gift that anybody's ever given me. Desperation. If you think back to Switzerland, you said you'd meet me on the rooftop, right? Well, for the first 20 minutes, I actually thought you'd show up. And the next hour... I considered taking that one-step shortcut to the lobby. If you know what I mean. But as I looked out over that city, nobody knew I was there, nobody could see me, no one was even looking. I had a thought that would guide me for years to come. Anonymity, Tony. Thanks to you, it's been my mantra ever since.

While most would consider Aldrich's behavior and actions less than moral, the way he took rejection and bounced back from it, shows just how focused he can be. Asking Tony for help hadn't been easy, and being turned down, embarrassed and humiliated, had been upsetting, but he'd taken that experience and used it to change everything about himself that he hated. Killian continued with his experiments, furthered the research on Extremis (created by Maya Hansen) and used it to heal his own physical disabilities. Extremis came with side effects, but he embraced them, letting them become a part of the new him. The capable, socially skilled, and suave businessman that learned from his mistakes and made himself into something close to perfection.

Over time, the once shy, stuttering man was squashed down and replaced by arrogance, a cocky demeanor, and an ego that rivaled most. In his arrogance, Killian believed that he could not only influence terrorism and society's perception of it, but that with the right moves, he could rule it. He could sway and control every aspect of the war on terror. Why would a man want to do this? Power. Wealth. To stroke his vanity. Aldrich was reveling in his new found success, thriving on having a healthy body, and loves the life that he'd given himself through hard work.

Killian's perception of the value of human life isn't atypical. If a human can be changed and made better, pushed and pushed and pushed towards perfection, then yes, he values that specific life. Otherwise, people are expendable and easily left to the wayside to be replaced by those that are better. His willful lack of caring is born from the pursuit to make everyone into what they were always meant to be and being able to do so strokes his ego. He is proud of the actions he's made, life lost or otherwise, because the pursuit of perfection is a worthy goal, one that he feels he's reached with himself. One that he can reach in others.

One of the most prominent characteristics to Killian's personality is that he believes himself to be above and beyond death and harm. Extremis heals him when he's injured, regrows limbs when they are cut off, repairs his body and sharpens his mind. After being 'mortally' wounded, past the point that any normal person could survive, Extremis heals him; essentially allowing him to cheat death. It puffs up his ego like nothing else before it has. He becomes even more volatile, telling Tony that they could finally remove all their false faces and become who they truly are. He carries that arrogance and ego with him until his very last breath.

Contracts:
Aldrich is a scientist through and through, meaning that this experience isn't one that he'd trade lightly. He'll agree to sign the contracts under the guise that he will conform to their rules, but that if he decides to act otherwise, he will. He's intelligent enough to know that while he's so far out of his depths, he should be cautious. He'll plot his actions quietly and carefully, making allies, and fashioning new goals out of his current circumstances.

Abilities/Skills:
Superhuman Strength: Extremis enhanced Killian's muscles to the point of being able to tear several Iron Man Armors with his bare hands.
Enhanced Agility: Extremis enhanced Killian's speed and agility to the point where he was able to effortlessly dodge many of Iron Man's repulsor attacks.
Regenerative Healing Factor: Killian was able to heal his previous disabilities, as it was the primary original intention of Extremis. He was able to heal superficial wounds almost immediately, regrow severed limbs in a matter of seconds, and even withstand powerful explosions.
Exothermic Manipulation: Hosts of Extremis are able to consciously raise the temperature of parts of their bodies. The effect can be controlled to the extent that it might only scorch skin, or increased to the point where it can cause steel to turn into a molten state.
Firebreathing: An advanced control of Extremis granted Killian the ability to breath fire, using it as an offensive power against James Rhodes when taking control of the Iron Patriot Armor.
Genius Level Intellect: Killian was an intelligent boy since young, and had an affinity for science. Initially being rejected by Tony Stark, Killian managed to start up A.I.M. and his Extremis project.
Scientist: Killian started to study many scientific fields in order to cure himself from his disability and manage to get revenge from Tony Stark, successfully becoming a great scientist.
Businessman: Killian was able to turn A.I.M., a privately funded think-tank, into one of the main Primary Systems Contractor for the United States Armed Forces and the United States Government.
Expert Martial Artist: During the battle of Norco, Killian was able to use his Extremis abilities to target vital parts in the Iron Man armor, allowing him to destroy a number of them.

SAMPLES
Network Sample:
[Before addressing the Network as a whole, Killian had taken the time to thoroughly comb through the Directory application found on the MID device he'd been given. There were a number of people on it that he could guess would be unhappy to see him, but honestly? He didn't care. They all signed the contracts. They all agreed to work here in relative peace. The way he saw it, that had meant that they couldn't harm him without angering their captains.

Killian had no issue with using them as a shield. They served a purpose in his plans, for now. He had questions to ask, and wasn't afraid to ask them out in the open.]

Well, I can't say that I'm not disappointed. But then, as my father used to say, failure is the fog through which we glimpse triumph.

[He's getting ahead of himself.]

I apologize for not being clear. I've only just arrived, and I'm disappointed with our welcome, if you'd call it that. The presence of appropriate information is lacking, and I'd like to discuss this ship, the captains, and our current state with anyone that is available.

[He flashes a lopsided grin, angling the MID higher.]

Do contact me if you're free. And please, call me Aldrich.

Prose/Action Sample:
After kissing Pepper goodbye, the flirtatious grin falls from his face, the phone he'd had pressed to his ear slid firmly back into his pocket. He no longer had to pretend to be so very pleased to see Pepper, so very delighted to speak with her. He nods to Savin, who shuts the car door behind him, and gets into the driver seat.

You know, I invited Tony to join AIM thirteen years ago. He turned me down. But something tells me now there's a new genius on the throne who doesn't have to answer to Tony any more and who has slightly less of an ego.

He hadn't expected his flattery to work, or for Pepper to accept his proposal, but he had accomplished the goal he'd gone in with. Tony Stark was more firmly aware of his existence now than he'd ever been. It was only the very first step, in a long line of many, but it was a start, one that had gone smoothly, without a hitch. As the car hits a bump, his eyes flick up, finger pressing the button to drop down the partition.

"Savin, if you don't mind, stop off at that bakery on ninth. I'd like to send Ms. Potts something to remind her of my recent visit," he requests, mouth curved into a smirk. A pastry, delicate and light, with many hidden layers and notes of spice and sugar. Something that she'd eat, unconsciously thinking of their conversation, unconsciously thinking of him.

With that, he sits back in his seat, counting down the moments until he can show Tony Stark who the man behind the mask is. Who he really is.
